Dr. Muhammad Saad Yousuf, a research assistant professor at The University of Texas at Dallas Center for Advanced Pain Studies (CAPS), has been awarded a substantial $3.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant is earmarked for investigating a potential biochemical trigger underlying diabetic neuropathy, a debilitating condition affecting millions of Americans. Dr. Yousuf, in partnership with scientists from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSCEP), will lead this five-year endeavor.

Their primary goal is to delve into the mechanisms of diabetic neuropathy and develop innovative non-opioid therapies to alleviate the chronic pain that significantly impairs the quality of life for about half of diabetic patients. This collaborative effort holds promise for addressing a pressing medical need and improving outcomes for individuals living with diabetes.
