ACS Releases Report on Cancer Disparities in AANHPI Communities
The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released a groundbreaking Cancer Facts & Figures report focusing on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations for 2024-2026. Despite data challenges, the report highlights significant cancer burden disparities within these diverse ethnic groups. Lung cancer ranks as the leading cause of death among men in all AANHPI ethnicities, while liver, stomach, and cervical cancer death rates are notably higher among Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander individuals compared to Whites. Dr. Nikita Wagle, ACS principal scientist, attributes these disparities to various factors including immigration patterns and access to preventative services. Breast cancer is the top cause of cancer death among certain AANHPI women, with lower early-stage diagnosis rates indicating access barriers to care. Rebecca Siegel, ACS senior scientific director, hopes the report will drive awareness and action to address these disparities.
