UT Tyler Receives NIH Grant for Breast Cancer Research
The University of Texas at Tyler has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to support the research of Dr. May Abdelaziz, an assistant professor at the Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy. Dr. Abdelaziz's research focuses on HER2, a protein associated with the growth of breast cancer. The grant will not only fund Dr. Abdelaziz's research but also provide students with research exposure. This grant is particularly significant as only 15% of applicants receive this type of funding. Dr. Amy Schwartz, the dean of the Fisch College of Pharmacy, highlighted the impact of the grant on advancing innovative research in cancer treatment. Dr. Abdelaziz aims to develop a new targeted therapy for breast cancer, specifically targeting HER2. This therapy could benefit the 30% of patients who do not respond to current treatments. Dr. Abdelaziz expressed gratitude for the NIH's support, emphasizing the potential of this research to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients.
